Leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s recent attacks on commercial vessels, civilian infrastructure, and energy facilities, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement, released by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office, calls on Iran to immediately stop threats, mine-laying, and drone and missile strikes, warning that interference with commercial shipping and global energy supply routes poses a threat to international peace and security under UN Security Council Resolution 2817.
Leaders emphasized that freedom of navigation is a core principle of international law and warned the impact of Iran’s actions will be felt globally, particularly by vulnerable populations, while urging a full halt to attacks on civilian infrastructure, including oil and gas sites.
The group said they are prepared to support efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait, backed the release of strategic petroleum reserves, and signaled additional steps to stabilize energy markets and assist affected nations through international institutions.
