The Trump administration plans to inform NATO allies this week that the United States will reduce the number of military capabilities it has committed to the alliance under the NATO Force Model, according to a Reuters report citing sources familiar with the matter.

The announcement is expected Friday during a meeting of NATO defense policy chiefs in Brussels. One source said revising the force model has become a key issue ahead of NATO’s July summit in Turkey.

The NATO Force Model identifies forces member nations could deploy during a major conflict or crisis involving the alliance. Sources said the Pentagon intends to significantly scale back the U.S. role as President Trump pushes European nations to assume greater responsibility for their own security.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the move was “to be expected” and “only right” as the alliance works to reduce “over-reliance” on a single member for defense capabilities.
