Trump-Backed Challenger Defeats Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky GOP Primary

by | May 19, 2026

Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie lost his Republican House primary Tuesday after President Trump backed challenger Ed Gallrein to remove the longtime congressman from office.

Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL, campaigned on his military background and support for Trump, accusing Massie of abandoning both the president and the Republican Party. He is expected to win the general election in the heavily Republican district.

It was the most expensive House primary in history.

Republican voters in Kentucky also selected Andy Barr as their nominee to replace retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell. Barr, who was endorsed by Trump, defeated former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron in the GOP Senate primary.
