John Eisenberg, the assistant attorney general overseeing the Justice Department’s National Security Division, has resigned, Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Friday.
The National Security Division oversees the department’s work involving counterintelligence, counterterrorism, cybersecurity, foreign intelligence surveillance and other national security matters.
The division oversaw the review and redaction of millions of pages of Jeffrey Epstein investigative files, and has been involved in implementing policies prioritizing investigations into antifa and other groups designated as extremist, as well as major national security leak investigations.
Eisenberg was confirmed by the Senate and sworn into office on June 5, 2025. He previously served as a national security adviser and deputy counsel to President Trump during his first term. His resignation came the same day as that of the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, whose office oversaw the Justice Department’s grand conspiracy investigation into efforts to undermine President Trump’s 2016 election campaign, as well as subsequent investigations targeting him.
