Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping signed a joint declaration Wednesday centered on building a “multipolar world,” alongside a package of bilateral agreements concluded during high-level talks at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.
Chinese and Russian officials said the declaration was part of a broader set of cooperation documents, with 20 agreements signed during the meeting and an additional 20 documents expected to be announced separately.
Putin said the two sides would expand cooperation and deepen coordination in international forums, describing efforts to lay “a strong foundation for a multipolar world.” Xi framed the relationship as a model between major powers and warned against “unilateral and hegemonic countercurrents running rampant.”
The two leaders also extended the 2001 Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation and reaffirmed their comprehensive strategic partnership first established in the 1990s. The
Xi said the relationship has “reached a new frontier” under joint leadership and should continue advancing toward “peace, development, cooperation, and mutual benefit,” including stronger political trust and closer strategic alignment. Both sides also emphasized efforts to build a more “just and rational” system of global governance while presenting their ties as a stabilizing force in international affairs.
