U.S. Revokes Visas for Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Allies

Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes

The State Department has announced that it has revoked the U.S. visas of Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, his allies on the court, and their immediate family members, citing an aggressive campaign of political censorship targeting Americans.

The action follows President Trump’s directive to hold foreign nationals accountable for infringing on protected speech in the United States. According to the statement, de Moraes’s political witch hunt against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has created a “persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil’s shores to target Americans.”

The visa revocations were implemented under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which authorizes the Secretary of State to deny entry to individuals whose presence “would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.” Certain family members are also subject to the restrictions.
