New York Attorney General Letitia James filed an appeal Thursday challenging a ruling that voided a $500 million penalty against President Trump and his company.
Two weeks ago, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court struck down the fine, finding it violated the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition on excessive fines. James is now asking the state’s highest court, the New York Court of Appeals, to reinstate the penalty.
The notice of appeal did not include specific arguments, which will be presented in later filings.
