Judicial Watch Files Lawsuits Against DOJ and ODNI Over Secret Targeting of Trump Adviser Michael Caputo

by | Aug 28, 2025

Judicial Watch announced Thursday it has filed multiple Freedom of Information Act lawsuits against the Department of Justice and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for failing to produce records related to the investigation of former Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo.

The watchdog group submitted the requests after disclosures that Caputo’s Google email account was secretly targeted by a search warrant in September 2023, just three weeks after he began working for the Trump 2024 campaign. Trump adviser and current White House aide Dan Scavino also revealed he was the subject of a similar hidden subpoena.

Judicial Watch is seeking documents from the Justice Department, FBI, and ODNI concerning the surveillance of Caputo, including investigative reports, interview transcripts, subpoenas to Google or other tech firms, and interagency communications mentioning him.

Caputo has said he faced death threats and financial ruin after becoming “ensnared by the congressional and special counsel investigations” into the Trump-Russia collusion hoax, a probe he has long maintained was politically motivated.

The new filings follow a separate Judicial Watch lawsuit in June seeking records on Biden-era FISA authorizations used to monitor Trump. The organization has played a central role in exposing details of the Trump-Russia investigations, which involved an array of Democratic operatives and attorneys.
