Former Special Counsel Jack Smith has asked to testify in open hearings before the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, according to a letter obtained by Fox News.
Smith’s attorneys, Lanny Breuer and Peter Koski, sent the letter Thursday to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley after both panels expressed interest in hearing from him.
According to the letter, Smith is also seeking DOJ guidance regarding grand jury secrecy rules and authorization to discuss portions of the Special Counsel’s final report, including Volume II, which remains nonpublic. His attorneys said he no longer has access to the Special Counsel’s files and would need that access restored to provide “full and accurate answers.” A source told Fox News that Smith’s legal team plans to formally seek guidance from the Justice Department.
The letter said Smith wants to testify publicly to address what his attorneys described as widespread mischaracterizations of his investigations into President Trump. They wrote that Smith followed DOJ procedures throughout his work but seeks assurance he will not face repercussions for testifying.
The request follows Chairman Jordan’s call for Smith to participate in a closed-door transcribed interview and provide records related to his investigation of President Trump.
