Federal investigators have issued subpoenas to left-wing influencer Hasan Piker and Medea Benjamin as part of a Treasury Department investigation into aid convoy trips to Cuba earlier this year.
The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control is reportedly examining whether the March “Nuestra America Convoy” violated U.S. sanctions laws by financing, coordinating, or delivering goods to Cuba. More than 40 Americans are said to be under scrutiny.
The subpoenas reportedly demand financial, logistical, and communications records connected to the Cuba travel. Under U.S. Cuban Assets Control Regulations, Americans are generally barred from unlicensed travel-related transactions and exporting goods or services to Cuba, though limited humanitarian and educational exemptions exist.
The convoy delivered roughly 20 tons of humanitarian aid to the island, while Piker later praised Cuba’s communist government following the trip.
CodePink helped organize the convoy after the Trump administration moved to tighten restrictions on Cuba last year. Benjamin has also faced criticism over alleged ties to Hamas and Iran, including multiple trips to Gaza between 2009 and 2012 where she met with Hamas officials, including former leader Ismail Haniyeh.
