The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Trump administration can move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) protections for thousands of Haitians and Syrians, delivering a major victory for the administration’s immigration agenda.
Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito said federal courts lack authority to review many of the claims brought by challengers and found little likelihood of success on allegations that the administration’s actions were motivated by racial animus.
The decision could have broader implications for TPS recipients from other countries, as the Trump administration has sought to terminate protections for 13 of the 17 nations designated under the program. The administration argues those countries no longer meet the requirements for TPS and maintains that federal judges should not second-guess those determinations.
The court’s three liberal justices dissented.
