Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa urged President Trump to lift the remaining U.S. sanctions on Syria during a phone call Sunday, arguing the move is critical to reviving the country’s economy and attracting foreign investment.
According to the Syrian presidency, the two leaders discussed support for Syria’s economy and broader regional developments.
The United States is also reviewing Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, a status that carries restrictions on foreign assistance, defense exports, and certain financial transactions. Remaining sanctions are widely viewed as a major obstacle to Syria’s economic recovery despite planned investments and financial support from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.
Separately, President Trump announced that U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack will take on expanded duties as Special Presidential Envoy to Syria and Iraq, citing growing strategic cooperation between Washington and the two governments.
