The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a significant win for South Carolina and other states seeking to block Medicaid funding for abortion providers, ruling in favor of the state in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic.
The decision clears a path for South Carolina to end Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood and similar organizations, a move hailed by pro-life advocates as a major step toward stopping taxpayer support for the abortion industry.
While the Hyde Amendment and state-level restrictions prevent federal funds from being used directly for most abortions, groups like Planned Parenthood still receive hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars annually through Medicaid and other programs. According to its most recent annual report, Planned Parenthood performed over 400,000 abortions in a single year, while receiving nearly $800 million in taxpayer funding.
