Two high-ranking federal officials have resigned amid clashes with the Trump administration over policy and staffing decisions. Michelle King, acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration, stepped down following a dispute with the Department of Government Efficiency over access to sensitive data. Jim Jones, head of the FDA’s food division, resigned after nearly 90 employees were terminated, calling the cuts “indiscriminate” and warning they would undermine the agency’s effectiveness.
Social Security Administration
Michelle King, the acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA), has stepped down following a dispute with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk. The contention arose over DOGE’s request for access to sensitive SSA data, including personal information of Social Security recipients. King, a veteran of the SSA since 1994, denied the request, expressing concerns over potential unauthorized access to private taxpayer data. In response to her resignation, the White House appointed Leland Dudek as the interim commissioner and nominated Frank Bisignano for the permanent role, pending Senate confirmation. Musk has recently highlighted potential Social Security fraud, suggesting it could be among the largest frauds ever.
FDA Food Division
Jim Jones, head of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) food division, resigned on Monday, citing challenges posed by recent widespread staff cuts within the agency. Over the weekend, 89 employees from the food division were terminated, actions Jones described as “indiscriminate.” In his resignation letter to Acting FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner, Jones expressed that these layoffs would hinder the division’s ability to implement the administration’s desired changes, stating it would be “fruitless” for him to continue in his role under such circumstances. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded by noting that some bureaucrats resist the mandate delivered by the American people, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to its agenda.
