The U.S. Justice Department has filed suit against New York over its Protect Our Courts Act, which prohibits federal immigration agents from arresting individuals at or near courthouses.
The department argues the law interferes with federal authority and shields dangerous aliens from lawful detention, warning it imposes criminal penalties on federal officials attempting to enforce immigration laws.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi accused New York of mimicking California’s sanctuary state tactics to obstruct federal enforcement, calling the lawsuit part of the DOJ’s broader effort to dismantle sanctuary policies nationwide.
“This latest lawsuit in a series of sanctuary city litigation underscores the Department of Justice’s commitment to keeping Americans safe and aggressively enforcing the law,” Bondi said.
