The House and Senate approved a short-term extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act early Friday, delaying its expiration from April 20 to April 30 after lawmakers rejected a late-night push for a longer-term renewal package.
A broader proposal collapsed in a 200–220 vote around 1:15 a.m., with 12 Republicans joining Democrats to block it. A separate procedural vote to advance an 18-month clean reauthorization also failed, 197–228, following opposition from conservatives pushing for reforms and Intelligence Committee members favoring a straight extension.
The short-term fix advanced in the House by unanimous consent, and the Senate approved the measure Friday morning before sending it to President Trump’s desk ahead of the April 30 deadline as negotiations continue over a longer-term renewal.
