President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump held their fourth phone call of the year on July 4, marking America’s 250th Independence Day. The 85-minute conversation, initiated by the United States, covered US-Russia relations, the war in Ukraine, Iran, and other international issues.

According to the Kremlin, Putin congratulated Trump on Independence Day, saying stronger, mutually beneficial ties between Russia and the United States would benefit both countries and the broader international community.

The leaders reflected on the shared history between their nations, including their alliance during World War II, before discussing the war in Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to helping end the conflict, with special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner continuing mediation efforts and remaining ready to travel to Moscow. Putin reiterated Russia’s commitment to pursuing a political and diplomatic settlement based on its longstanding principles.

The two presidents also discussed Iran. According to the Kremlin, Putin said he hopes ongoing US-Iran negotiations under a memorandum of understanding will produce a long-term agreement and reiterated Russia’s willingness to help de-escalate tensions in the region. The Kremlin said Trump thanked Russia for its balanced approach and constructive proposals.

The conversation also focused on the future of US-Russia relations. Both leaders emphasized maintaining dialogue on military, political, and economic issues, with the Kremlin saying Trump noted that ending the Ukraine conflict would be essential to expanding cooperation between the two countries. They also highlighted continued cooperation in space, including an upcoming joint Russian-US crew launch to the International Space Station from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

The leaders agreed to remain in contact and hold another phone call soon. Putin also renewed his standing invitation for Trump to visit Russia. According to the Kremlin, the July 4 conversation followed a June 14 call initiated by Russia to mark Trump’s 80th birthday.
