House lawmakers approved a bill Saturday targeting TikTok as part of a comprehensive aid package for Israel and Ukraine, significantly progressing the possibility of a U.S. ban on the app.
The bipartisan vote was 360-58. The approved version of the bill on Saturday extends the timeline for TikTok to find a new owner to 270 days, a significant increase from the approximately six months outlined in previous iterations of the legislation. The bill grants the White House the discretion to prolong this deadline by an additional 90 days if Biden deems that there is substantial progress toward securing a sale.
House Republicans strategically linked the TikTok bill to funding for Ukrainian military equipment and Israeli missile defense, urging Senate lawmakers to address the entire package in a single decisive vote.
Policy analysts anticipate swift action from the Senate on the aid package, with favorable chances of passage. Biden has previously expressed his willingness to sign the TikTok legislation into law should it advance to his desk.
