Hezbollah has vowed to escalate its aggression against Israel following a weekend assault involving hundreds of missiles and drones. The Iran-backed group’s strikes, which targeted civilian and military sites, resulted in at least one Israeli death and significant damage.
Israel managed to intercept many of the incoming projectiles and destroyed Hezbollah’s rocket launchers before they could fully impact civilian centers, including those near Tel Aviv.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned that further retaliation could follow if the current strikes do not achieve their desired outcome. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that Israel is prepared for continued conflict and has already responded by targeting over 40 Hezbollah-controlled sites across Lebanon.
The latest assault marks the most significant escalation in nearly 10 months of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and threatens to widen the broader Middle Eastern conflict involving Iran’s key terror proxy. The attack also complicates U.S.-led efforts to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Hamas, which had rejected a weekend deal for a ceasefire and the return of over 100 hostages, reportedly launched a rocket at central Israel shortly after rejecting the agreement.
President Trump criticized the Biden administration's diplomatic efforts, suggesting they are failing to manage the escalating violence. “Who is negotiating for us in the Middle East? Bombs are dropping all over the place!” Trump posted on X. “Let’s not have World War III, because that’s where we’re heading!”
The White House affirmed its support for Israel’s right to defend itself and pledged to continue working towards regional stability. Harris has yet to comment on the situation.
Hezbollah’s attack appears to have been strategically timed to disrupt ongoing peace talks. U.S. intelligence had reportedly anticipated the strike and shared some information with Israel. Analysts suggest that the attack was intended to derail peace negotiations and intensify pressure on Israel.
Following the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, regional tensions have heightened, and American mediators' efforts to persuade Iran to restrain its proxies seem to have failed. Iranian media praised Hezbollah’s actions, claiming that over 320 missiles were fired at Israeli military bases and showcasing the group’s missile and drone capabilities.
Hezbollah’s arsenal includes around 40,000 trained fighters and a significant stockpile of rockets, missiles, and drones, much of which is supplied by Iran. A full-scale conflict could result in severe casualties across both Israel and Lebanon.
