Danish Lawmakers Approve U.S. Military Bases Amid Trump Push for Greenland

by | Jun 11, 2025

Denmark’s Parliament voted Wednesday to allow U.S. military bases on Danish soil, marking a significant shift in its defense posture. The move comes as President Trump seeks to gain U.S. control over Greenland, something he framed as essential not just for America but “for the free world,” citing Arctic military positioning and rare-earth mineral resources.

The bill, which builds on a 2023 agreement under the Biden administration granting U.S. forces access to Danish airbases, passed with 94 votes in favor and 11 against. Critics warn the expanded arrangement surrenders Danish sovereignty to Washington. The legislation now heads to King Frederik X for final approval.
