A significant figure in the 2019 impeachment investigation of President Trump, Gordon Sondland, officially registered as a foreign agent representing Ukraine and the European Union last Thursday.
Sondland, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union from 2018 to 2020, played a pivotal role in the impeachment proceedings. He testified before the House of Representatives Select Committee on Intelligence, alleging that Trump attempted to leverage military aid to Ukraine in exchange for an investigation into then-Vice President Joe Biden's son's business dealings in the country.
Sondland submitted a registration statement to the U.S. Department of Justice, officially declaring himself as a foreign agent representing the interests of both Ukraine and the E.U. in the United States. The document was obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Enacted in 1938, FARA regulates the activities of foreign governments and other entities engaging in lobbying efforts with U.S. officials. It mandates that individuals must register under FARA before commencing any lobbying activities, irrespective of their U.S. citizenship status.
