During a Wednesday hearing, Hunter Biden and brother of Joe, James Biden faced accusations of lying from two House Republican impeachment inquiry witnesses.
Tony Bobulinski, one of the witnesses, claimed he had put himself “at grave risk” by coming forward and accused his former business partners, Hunter and James, of “perjury” during their depositions last month regarding Biden's alleged past involvement in their overseas business.
In his opening remarks, Bobulinski asserted that Hunter misled about “important details concerning” a July 2017 shakedown text message he planned to send to an executive at the firm, CEFC China Energy, just 10 days before $5.1 million was deposited into accounts associated with Hunter and James Biden.
In his testimony to the Oversight Committee on February 28, Hunter denied that his father had ever “interacted” with business associates. He admitted to being “drunk and probably high” when he sent the message to the wrong Chinese associate, and he claimed his father was not sitting next to him at the time.
Bobulinski also clarified that during his tenure as the CEO of Sinohawk Holdings and as part of the partnership the Bidens pursued with a Chinese state-linked energy firm, he had met with Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, and Jim Biden at the Beverly Hilton in May 2017. This contradicts the denial from James, who claimed that such a meeting never took place.
James Biden's transcript indicates that he firmly denied the occurrence of the meeting, even when presented with evidence of his texts with Bobulinski. Bobulinski emphasized, “Hunter Biden, in his own transcribed interview, confirmed that that meeting took place. Hunter confirmed his uncle perjured himself in front of this committee.”
Bobulinski further stated, “The committee was so shocked by his perjury that they asked him the same question multiple times. Each time he denied meeting with me and Joe Biden, after the committee showed him text messages confirming that.”
Republicans spent nearly eight hours revisiting evidence provided by Bobulinski and other witnesses regarding Biden’s involvement in his son and brother's business dealings. They also scrutinized bank records revealing millions of dollars transferring from foreign benefactors to members of the first family.
The session concluded with Oversight chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) stating his intention to summon Joe Biden himself to testify—a request unprecedented since 1974 when President Gerald Ford was called upon to clarify his decision to pardon former President Richard Nixon.
Asked directly by House Ways and Means chairman Jason Smith (R-Mo.) about every statement the first son made about his father not being involved in foreign business deals, Bobulinski called Hunter’s testimony “blatant lies.”
In his prepared remarks submitted to the committee, Bobulinski hinted at additional instances of perjury by Hunter and James Biden, expressing his desire for members to “hold them accountable.”
