A judge on Thursday dismissed President Trump's request for a new trial in the defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll, upholding the jury's decision to award $83.3 million in damages to Carroll.
Judge Lewis Kaplan stated that contrary to the defendant's assertions, Ms. Carroll's compensatory damages were not solely for her emotional distress, nor were they for ordinary harms. The judge deemed the damages awarded not to be excessive. He added that Trump’s ‘malicious and unceasing’ attacks on the writer were heard by more than 100 million people, including public threats and personal attacks that endangered Ms. Carroll’s health and safety.
