President Trump will travel to China from March 31 to April 2 for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, a White House official said Friday. Discussions will focus on whether to extend a trade truce that paused tariff increases.
“That’s going to be a wild one,” Trump told foreign leaders Thursday about the trip. “We have to put on the biggest display you’ve ever had in the history of China.”
This would be the leaders’ first talks since February and their first in-person meeting since October in South Korea, where Trump agreed to reduce certain tariffs in exchange for Beijing curbing illicit fentanyl trafficking, resuming U.S. soybean purchases, and maintaining rare earth exports.
Trump said Xi also indicated during the February call that China might increase soybean purchases, a key issue for struggling U.S. farmers, as China remains the top consumer of U.S. soybeans.
