President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday tightening mail-in voting rules nationwide, expanding federal citizenship verification requirements and interagency data sharing to help states maintain updated voter rolls.
The order directs the Department of Homeland Security, in coordination with the Social Security Administration, to develop verified lists of U.S. citizens eligible to vote in each state, and requires federal systems to be used to cross-check and update voter registration data. It also instructs agencies to refer potential cases involving noncitizen registration or voting for investigation.
The U.S. Postal Service is required to send absentee ballots only to voters on state-approved mail-in voting lists. The directive further mandates new ballot security measures, including specialized envelopes with unique barcodes for tracking and verification, and requires states to receive updated eligible voter lists at least 60 days before each federal election.
