The White House on Thursday dismissed the leadership of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), with commissioners receiving notices stating their positions were terminated effective immediately.
Created by Congress in 2002 as a “bipartisan” agency, the EAC certifies voting equipment, distributes federal election funding, and provides election security guidance to states. The move comes after the Trump administration also scaled back the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s election-related role.
The EAC was also targeted in President Trump’s election executive order, which sought to require proof of citizenship for federal voter registration and encourage states to adopt Election Day mail ballot deadlines.
