Trump and Putin Expected to Meet in Saudi Arabia for Ukraine Peace Talks

by | Feb 12, 2025

President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to meet in Saudi Arabia, with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman playing a role in the discussions. The meeting would focus on negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Russia’s sovereign wealth fund chief Kirill Dmitriev played a role in negotiations for the release of U.S. teacher Marc Fogel from a Russian prison, according to a source who spoke to Reuters.

Trump has maintained that Ukraine must make peace, arguing that continued conflict is unsustainable. He also said he does not believe it is practical for Ukraine to join NATO, a position that aligns with one of Russia’s long-standing demands.

As part of the broader efforts surrounding the war, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to travel to Ukraine to ensure the U.S. recoups financial aid sent during the conflict. Trump has pushed for greater oversight of funds provided to Ukraine and has signaled a shift in U.S. policy toward financial accountability.

According to Trump, Putin expressed a desire to end the war and prevent a scenario where fighting resumes six months later. The potential meeting in Saudi Arabia is expected to be a key step in determining whether a long-term peace deal can be reached.
