Trump Administration Turns to OAN for Voice of America Content After Funding Cuts

by | May 8, 2025

The Trump administration has reached an agreement to use content from the conservative network One America News (OAN) on Voice of America (VOA) and other U.S. international broadcasting platforms.

VOA has been offline since mid-March following funding cuts initiated by President Trump, who has criticized the outlet—along with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty—for promoting a liberal-leaning news agenda. The cuts have sparked ongoing legal challenges that remain unresolved.

Kari Lake, representing President Trump at the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees funding for VOA and similar services, said she approached OAN after a recommendation from the Office of Cuba Broadcasting. OAN offered to supply news content and video at no cost. Lake described the move as “an enormous benefit to the American taxpayer.”

Charles Herring, president of OAN, confirmed the network had been asked to assist and said, “We simply wished to help when asked.” He added that how VOA uses OAN’s material will be up to VOA itself.

Prior to halting operations in March, VOA had canceled its contracts with major news services such as the Associated Press, Reuters, and Agence France-Presse.

Lake clarified on social media that she does not hold editorial control over VOA broadcasts but said she aims to “ensure our outlets have reliable and credible options as they work to craft their reporting and news programs.”
