Johnson and Grassley Subpoena Telecom Firms Over Jack Smith Jan. 6 Phone Records

by | Jan 14, 2026

Republican Sens. Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley on Wednesday issued subpoenas to three telecommunications companies seeking unredacted records tied to former special counsel Jack Smith’s Jan. 6 investigation, which swept up phone data linked to more than 400 individuals, including members of Congress.

The subpoenas target AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen after the senators said prior responses were heavily redacted and failed to identify the individuals or entities associated with the phone numbers listed in earlier requests. The action was taken through Johnson’s Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and co-signed by Grassley, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The move follows documents released last year showing the FBI, under the Biden administration, investigated President Trump and hundreds of associates over Jan. 6 activity, including collecting phone records and location data from prominent lawmakers. Grassley said the new subpoenas are aimed at clarifying the scope of Smith’s data requests and identifying whose records were obtained.
