House Rejects Stopgap Spending Bill, Pushing Government Closer to Shutdown

by | Dec 19, 2024

The House decisively rejected a Trump-backed stopgap spending bill aimed at extending government funding into next year. The measure failed in a 174-235 vote, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed for passage.

Nearly all Democrats and 38 Republicans opposed the proposal.

House GOP leaders introduced the 116-page stopgap spending bill on Thursday after hours of negotiations to revise an earlier proposal that was rejected by President Trump and his allies.

The provision was introduced as a last-minute request from Trump, who urged Republicans on Wednesday to reject any continuing resolution package that did not include a debt ceiling increase.
