The Department of Justice has directed its Civil Rights Division to investigate former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, following a recent referral alleging she provided false testimony to Congress regarding the events of January 6, according to The New York Times, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Hutchinson, who previously served under former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, testified before the Jan. 6 committee in June 2022, though her testimony was disputed by Anthony Ornato, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations.
The inquiry, opened in recent weeks, stems from allegations that Hutchinson lied under oath. Rather than routing the matter through the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, typically responsible for handling congressional perjury cases, DOJ leadership assigned it directly to Civil Rights Division chief Harmeet Dhillon.
The decision marks a departure from standard procedure, as the division generally handles cases involving systemic civil rights violations such as police misconduct or discrimination.
