Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell announced he will resign from Congress and has suspended his campaign for California governor following mounting controversy tied to sexual misconduct allegations and other reported misconduct.

In a statement posted to X, Swalwell wrote, “To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” adding, “I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”

The moves came after increasing pressure from several prominent Democrats calling for him to drop out of the governor’s race, along with a wave of withdrawn endorsements following the emergence of the allegations.
