The House Ways and Means Committee has subpoenaed three left-wing nonprofits after they failed to turn over a single document on more than $39 million funneled from Marxist tech billionaire Neville Roy Singham.
Chairman Jason Smith’s panel issued the subpoenas July 21 to the People’s Forum, BreakThrough News, and Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research. The groups had ignored earlier requests for records on foreign-linked funding, contracts with foreign entities, communications with Singham, and overseas grants.
Singham, an American-born software mogul who sold ThoughtWorks for roughly $785 million and now lives in Shanghai, has poured hundreds of millions into socialist and communist causes worldwide. Fox News’ earlier investigation traced $22.44 million to the People’s Forum, $16.76 million to Tricontinental, and about $1.1 million to BreakThrough’s parent. The money allegedly moved through shell companies and donor-advised funds designed to hide the original source.
Attorneys for the groups claimed the requests lacked clear legislative purpose, violated First Amendment rights, and improperly invoked the Foreign Agents Registration Act. People’s Forum lawyers even compared the probe to a 1950s “witch hunt.” The committee rejected those arguments, insisting it is examining financial structures and whether tax rules let foreign-linked cash flow through intermediaries without disclosure, not the groups’ politics or journalism.
The subpoenas demand the records by August 7.
