Elon Musk and Vladimir Putin in Regular Contact Since Late 2022

by | Oct 25, 2024

Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest man and a critical figure in U.S. space operations, has maintained regular communications with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022. These discussions, confirmed by U.S., European, and Russian officials, span personal, business, and geopolitical issues.

Musk’s communications with the Kremlin appear to be a well-guarded secret, with several White House officials reportedly unaware of the discussions.

This year, Musk has also emerged as a key supporter of Donald Trump’s election campaign and could assume a significant role in a future Trump administration if elected. Musk’s ongoing dialogue with Putin, while the West continues to isolate the Russian leader, signals possible re-engagement, aligning with Trump’s stated goal of negotiating on contentious issues like the war in Ukraine.

Musk’s contacts with Putin raise national security concerns within the Biden administration, given Putin’s role as a major U.S. adversary. SpaceX, Musk’s company, holds deep ties with U.S. military and intelligence services, including a $1.8 billion classified contract. Musk’s security clearance grants him access to highly sensitive information.

The matter is sensitive, particularly as the U.S. presidential election nears, and Musk’s involvement in Trump’s campaign deepens. The billionaire has dismissed accusations of being sympathetic to Putin as “absurd” and has defended his companies’ actions, claiming they have significantly undermined Russia.

A Pentagon spokesman said: “We do not comment on any individual’s security clearance, review or status, or about personnel security policy matters in the context of reports about any individual’s actions.” Another source noted that the government faces a dilemma due to its reliance on Musk’s technology. SpaceX is integral to national security and NASA operations, making any potential risks associated with Musk’s contacts with Putin a “pressing concern.” However, there have been no red flags raised over security breaches concerning Musk’s communication with Putin, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov downplayed the extent of Musk’s interactions with Putin, acknowledging only one phone call to discuss space and future technologies. Nevertheless, Musk’s ongoing role in both business and geopolitics has drawn widespread attention, including from Trump’s campaign, which praised Musk as a visionary capable of reforming the federal bureaucracy.

Musk’s interest in Russia predates these developments. He had explored Russian rocket programs as early as 2002, and his conversations with Putin and other Russian officials further underline his inclination to extend his influence beyond the business world. However, Putin, labeled a “despot” by the U.S. Treasury, has become a chief antagonist of the United States.

In October 2022, Musk publicly stated that he had spoken to Putin only once, about space, around April 2021. Yet, recent reports indicate that more discussions have taken place, including with Sergei Kiriyenko, Putin’s first deputy chief of staff. Although the specifics of their conversations remain unclear, the involvement of high-ranking Russian officials in such talks highlights the growing overlap between Musk’s interests and geopolitical matters.

As Russia’s influence expands through “disinformation campaigns” and military aggression, Musk’s evolving stance on the Ukraine conflict has raised additional questions. Despite early support for Kyiv, Musk restricted Starlink’s use for offensive operations in Crimea, citing the potential for nuclear escalation. Reports suggest that pressure from the Kremlin may have played a role in these decisions. Two sources revealed that Putin once asked Musk not to activate his Starlink satellite service over Taiwan, allegedly at the request of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

No official alerts have been raised about potential security breaches.
