DOJ, ATF Roll Out 34 Firearms Rule Changes Following Second Amendment Review

by | Apr 30, 2026

The Department of Justice and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives announced the release of 34 proposed and final firearm-related rules this week, marking the first phase of a broader regulatory overhaul tied to Executive Order 14206, “Protecting Second Amendment Rights.”

Officials said the changes are intended to streamline outdated rules and reduce compliance burdens on lawful gun owners and businesses, while maintaining the agency’s enforcement capabilities. The update focuses on aligning federal regulations with current law, court precedent, and ATF practices.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the initiative is aimed at ending the misuse of federal authority against lawful gun owners, adding that the department will continue to defend Second Amendment protections. Newly confirmed ATF Director Robert Cekada said enforcement priorities will shift toward intentional violators and criminal actors rather than technical or unintentional compliance issues.

The ATF said summaries of the new and proposed rules will be published on its website, with public feedback encouraged before final implementation. Officials indicated additional regulatory updates are expected in the coming months.
