Cambodia to Nominate President Trump for Nobel Peace Prize Following Border Ceasefire

Cambodia plans to nominate President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his direct role in brokering a ceasefire in the recent deadly border conflict with Thailand, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol confirmed Friday.

Speaking in Phnom Penh, Chanthol credited Trump with halting the heaviest fighting between Cambodia and Thailand in over a decade, saying he “deserved” the world’s highest peace honor for advancing diplomacy and restoring calm.

Trump personally intervened last week to help break a deadlock in negotiations leading to a ceasefire agreement reached Monday in Malaysia. The conflict had left at least 43 dead and displaced over 300,000 people across both sides of the border.

“We acknowledge his great efforts for peace,” Chanthol said.

Chanthol, who also serves as Cambodia’s chief trade negotiator, said the Trump administration’s support extended beyond diplomacy. He credited Trump for significantly reducing proposed U.S. tariffs on Cambodian exports—from a threatened 49% to just 19%—a move Chanthol said spared the country’s critical garment and footwear industry from collapse.

Cambodia’s announcement follows similar gestures from other nations. Pakistan said in June it would recommend Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in diffusing tensions with India. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also stated last month that he had submitted a nomination on Trump’s behalf.
