President Trump on Thursday warned that he would invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy federal forces in Minnesota if state politicians fail to stop professional agitators and insurrectionists attacking Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Trump’s message on Truth Social came as protests have erupted in Minneapolis and across the state amid heightened tensions following multiple ICE-involved shootings.
In the Truth Social post, Trump said that if Minnesota officials do not “obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job,” he would “institute the Insurrection Act, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State.”
The Insurrection Act of 1807 gives the president authority to deploy active-duty military forces domestically to suppress insurrection, domestic violence, or enforce federal law when state authorities are unable or unwilling to do so.
