FBI Records Show Internal Concerns Over Mar-a-Lago Search Warrant

by | Apr 2, 2026

Judicial Watch has released FBI records showing internal concerns over the legal basis for the 2022 search of President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, including field agent objections to pursuing a search warrant and questions about whether less intrusive approaches were considered.

The documents were obtained through a FOIA request tied to the “Plasmic Echo” counterintelligence investigation, which originated from a National Archives and Records Administration referral.

According to the records, FBI personnel raised disagreements over probable cause for the search and expressed concerns about the scope of the warrant, including specific areas of the property. Internal communications also reflect disputes with the Justice Department over operational planning, as well as discussions about coordination, escalation, and handling pre-search contact in a way that accounted for potential “optics.”

The files further reference coordination involving the Justice Department and White House Counsel’s Office related to investigative steps, along with a May 2022 Washington Post inquiry indicating press awareness of the investigation. FBI Director Christopher Wray later issued a bureau-wide message defending the investigation as consistent with agency standards.
