War Secretary Pete Hegseth has removed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, set to retire effective immediately as the 41st Army chief.

Officials also said Hegseth dismissed two additional senior Army leaders, Chief of Chaplains Maj. Gen. William Green and Army Transformation and Training Command head David Hodne, in a broader purge of top brass.

Hegseth had apparently been targeting George for removal for months, citing his ties to prior leadership, including his role as senior military assistant to War Secretary Lloyd Austin during the previous administration.

Hegseth is reportedly positioning Gen. Christopher LaNeve as a potential successor, after pushing to install him as Army vice chief. The decision to remove George also follows internal friction involving Army Secretary Dan Driscoll.
