Trump Media and Rumble Sue Brazilian Justice Over Censorship

by | Feb 19, 2025

Trump Media & Technology Group and video-sharing platform Rumble filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, accusing him of unlawful censorship. The lawsuit, submitted in the U.S. District Court in Tampa, alleges that Moraes’ prior rulings censor legitimate political discourse in the United States.

Rumble stated that the lawsuit specifically accuses Moraes of violating First Amendment protections by ordering the suspension of a U.S.-based account belonging to a well-known political figure, though the individual was not named.

Rumble previously disabled access in Brazil in 2023, citing court orders to remove certain creators, a move it vowed to fight. The platform resumed operations earlier this year, with CEO Chris Pavlovski claiming Brazil had withdrawn its censorship order, though details were not provided. Pavlovski also credited Rumble’s presence for Trump’s election victory.

Moraes has clashed with tech companies before, including a prolonged dispute with Elon Musk. In January, he warned that social media firms must adhere to Brazilian law to continue operating in the country, stating that the Supreme Court would not allow them to profit from hate speech.
