Iran launched ballistic missiles at a U.S. military base in Jordan and attacked commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday after U.S. forces sank five Iranian oil tankers.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it attacked 10 ships, including two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers, and warned that any further U.S. strikes would trigger a much larger response. Jordan said its air defenses intercepted 18 of 20 Iranian missiles fired toward a base near Al Azraq, with two landing in unpopulated areas and no casualties reported.
The U.S. military said the Jordan attack was ineffective and that all American personnel were accounted for. Washington said it destroyed the five Iranian tankers after Iranian forces targeted a U.S. Navy warship twice with ballistic missiles. Several commercial vessels were also reported damaged in the Gulf and Gulf of Oman. At least one sailor was killed and another was reported missing.
