Trump Announces Major Trade Deal With India

by | Feb 2, 2026

President Trump said Monday he reached a trade agreement with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reducing U.S. tariffs and boosting exports.

“Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Modi and, as per his request, effective immediately, we agreed to a Trade Deal between the United States and India,” Trump wrote.

The deal lowers the U.S. reciprocal tariff from 25% to 18%, while India will cut its tariffs and non-tariff barriers on U.S. goods to zero. Modi also committed to “BUY AMERICAN” at a much higher level, including more than $500 billion in U.S. energy, technology, agriculture, coal, and other products.

Trump said the two leaders discussed ending the war in Ukraine. Modi agreed to stop buying Russian oil and increase purchases from the U.S. and potentially Venezuela. Trump framed the move as helping “END THE WAR in Ukraine, which is taking place right now, with thousands of people dying each and every week!”
