Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned Monday, with White House communications director Steven Cheung confirming she will leave the administration to take a position in the private sector.
Cheung said Chavez-DeRemer “has done a phenomenal job” advancing worker protections, enforcing fair labor practices, and expanding workforce development efforts during her tenure. Cheung confirmed that Keith Sonderling will serve as Acting Secretary of Labor.
Two Republicans who have spoken with President Trump said he was expected to move to remove Chavez-DeRemer ahead of an April 22 congressional hearing that was anticipated to be contentious. Some within the White House believed Democrats planned to center the hearing on allegations surrounding her conduct.
