Senate Blocks Government Funding Bill Ahead of Shutdown Deadline

by | Jan 29, 2026

Senate Democrats and eight Republicans on Thursday voted 45-55 to block a six-bill government funding package that must pass by Friday at midnight to prevent a shutdown. Senate Majority Leader John Thune joined the “no” votes but immediately moved to reconsider the package.

Democrats opposed the bill over Homeland Security funding, demanding Trump administration reforms to curb ICE enforcement and end violent encounters with protesters.

Centrist Sen. John Fetterman also voted against advancing the package, aiming to separate Homeland Security appropriations from the other bills. Seven Republicans, Rand Paul, Ted Budd, Ron Johnson, Mike Lee, Ashley Moody, Rick Scott, and Tommy Tuberville, joined the opposition.
