Appeals Court Pauses Order Requiring Trump Administration to Reinstate Voice of America Staff

by | Apr 1, 2026

A federal appeals court on Tuesday temporarily blocked a lower court order that would have required the Trump administration to return hundreds of Voice of America employees to work after being placed on paid leave.

A three-judge panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit issued a stay while the administration appeals a March 17 ruling from U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth. The order means more than 1,000 Voice of America employees will remain on administrative leave while the case proceeds, a process that could take months.

Lamberth had ordered the administration to restore operations at the government-funded Voice of America after it was effectively shut down, ruling in favor of the plaintiffs.

The case is now before Circuit Judges Karen LeCraft Henderson, Robert Wilkins, and Gregory Katsas, who will consider the administration’s appeal.
