Kennedy Jr. is reorganizing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, elevating Chris Klomp to oversee day-to-day operations as chief counselor while pushing out several deputies, including Jim O’Neill, who will leave his posts at HHS and the CDC and reportedly be offered an ambassador role.
Klomp, John Brooks, and other elevated officials previously led high-profile initiatives, including drug price reforms, boosting their standing at the White House. Officials say the moves aim to “muscle up” HHS to deliver policy victories that will feature in Republican midterm messaging.
O’Neill, who headed the CDC after Kennedy ousted Susan Monarez, had criticized the agency during the pandemic for poor communication, flawed data collection, and excessive influence. The changes follow internal HHS conflicts, including FDA infighting and vaccine disputes. The White House endorsed the reorganization.
