President Putin said Thursday that Russia agrees with U.S. proposals for a ceasefire in Ukraine, provided it leads to long-term peace and ‘removes’ the root causes of the conflict. He emphasized that many details still need to be resolved.
“We proceed from the fact that this cessation should be such that it would lead to long-term peace and would eliminate the original causes of this crisis,” Putin said.
Putin expressed appreciation for Trump’s efforts to halt the fighting. “The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it,” he said. “But there are issues that we need to discuss. And I think we need to talk to our American colleagues as well.” He added that he might call Trump to discuss the matter, reiterating Russia’s support for a peaceful resolution.
Since mid-2024, Russian forces have been advancing and now control nearly a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, three years into the war that U.S. President Trump has vowed to end.
On Wednesday, Putin visited a command post in western Russia’s Kursk region, wearing green camouflage as he surveyed a battlefield where Ukraine is on the verge of losing its foothold following a major Russian offensive.
