Disbarred attorney Michael Cohen confessed to his former legal counsel, Robert Costello, that he lacked evidence of crimes committed by President Trump. Costello informed Members of Congress on Wednesday that Cohen had lied on the witness stand during the ongoing hush money trial against President Trump.
Costello previously served as Michael Cohen's criminal defense attorney before Cohen opted for counsel from Lanny Davis instead. According to Costello, Cohen repeatedly asserted that he possessed no evidence against former President Trump. “Each time Cohen said to me: ‘I swear to God, Bob, I don’t have anything on Donald Trump,'” Costello recalled, noting that Cohen made this statement at least ten times despite Costello's various inquiries.
Cohen's former criminal defense attorney revealed that the disgraced lawyer's primary concern was avoiding prison time. According to Costello, Cohen repeatedly emphasized his determination to evade incarceration, stating, “Guys, I want you to remember, I will do whatever I have to do, I will never spend one day in jail.”
Costello's statements suggest that Cohen's actions were driven by fear of the consequences of his crimes, and he was willing to lie to escape punishment. Costello also recalled a moment when Cohen confided in him about standing atop his hotel's roof, contemplating suicide due to the pressure of his criminal case. When Costello suggested cooperating against Donald Trump instead, Cohen maintained his stance, repeatedly asserting, “I swear to God, Bob, I don't have anything on Donald Trump.”
