Sen. Amy Klobuchar announced Thursday that she is seeking the Democratic nomination for Minnesota governor, entering the race after Gov. Tim Walz ended his reelection bid during a federal investigation into widespread fraud involving state social service programs.
Klobuchar launched her campaign with a four-minute video that criticized the Trump administration and referenced federal immigration enforcement. “These times call for leaders who can stand up and not be rubber stamps of this administration,” Klobuchar said in the video. “But who are also willing to find common ground and fix things in our state.”
Party strategists expect Klobuchar to face limited competition in the Democratic primary, though some progressive figures have discussed the possibility of backing an alternative candidate. Nearly a dozen Republicans had already entered the race before Walz withdrew.
