Former Special Counsel Jack Smith allegedly tracked the private phone calls and communications of nearly a dozen Republican senators as part of his investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, Fox News reported.
According to a source, the surveillance likely centered on calls related to the certification of the 2020 presidential election. A document reviewed by Fox News showed that Smith’s “Arctic Frost” investigative team targeted the phone records of Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Josh Hawley of Missouri, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, and Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania.
The document, titled “CAST Assistance” and dated September 27, 2023, was reportedly uncovered by FBI Director Kash Patel. “CAST” refers to the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team. The file, labeled “ARCTIC FROST—Election Law Matters—Sensitive Investigative Matter—CAST,” listed the lawmakers’ names and stated that an FBI special agent on Smith’s team had conducted a preliminary toll analysis of their phone records.
An FBI official told Fox News Digital the records revealed which numbers the lawmakers called, along with the locations from which the calls originated and were received. The records were reportedly collected in 2023 after subpoenas were issued to major telephone providers. The “Arctic Frost” case was opened on April 13, 2022, and Smith took over the probe in November of that year.
FBI officials said the records surfaced as part of an oversight request from Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. Patel and Bongino ordered a deeper review of the “Arctic Frost” case following Grassley’s request.
